Longer Semi-Trailer Information and Consultation

Longer semi-trailers got the green light on October 11 2011 – but with many strings attached and some important clarifications needed.

Roads and logistics minister Mike Penning set out his response to the formal consultation, with trials, initially at least, limited to 1,800 trailer: 900 at 14.6 metres and 900 at 15.65 metres.

We are in unchartered territory with this trial, which could be seen as a return to quantity licensing – an ironic development for this government. The devil is in the detail and it is unclear how trailers will be allocated among operators if demand for LSTs is over-subscribed. We expect to be discussing that issue with DfT over the next week or so. We have stressed repeatedly that the interests of medium-sized and smaller firms must be protected in the allocation process.

Meanwhile, our message to members is clear - assess, as a matter of urgency, how many of the new lengths to apply for, which length suits your business, and which axle designs are best for your operation, if you wish to apply.
