Irish go for low alcohol limit As the UK ponders cutting the blood alcohol (BAC) limit, the alcohol limit for drivers in the Irish Republic is to be reduced. The limit for qualified drivers has been cut from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg. The provision was contained in the Road Traffic Bill passed in the Irish parliament's upper house.

The RHA has objected to the licence application of Taymix Transport Limited, in a bid to prevent the company operating trucks. Taymix has applied for a licence to operate 12 trucks and 20 trailers.

The RHA’s concern over the reduction in investment allowances has featured in the second reading debate on the Finance Bill this week. Stewart Hosie (SNP) welcomed the phased reduction in corporation tax, but questioned whether it makes sense to pay for it through changes to capital and other investment allowances. He quoted the Road Haulage Association’s concern over the reduction of the investment allowance, which is to be reduced to £25,000 from £100,000

Next January’s VAT increase is likely to lead to yet more pressure on the industry, we believe. Asda and Comet are quoted in The Sun as saying they will avoid passing on the VAT increase and welcomed the six-month delay in implementation as that that would give manufacturers what Comet calls “the time to work on their pricing strategy”.

Self-employed HGV (and coach) drivers are covered by the Road Transport Directive on working time, the European parliament insisted today. But it won’t take effect in the near future. The decision may not be final and in any case there are no UK enabling regulations in the pipeline.

Budget note to Chancellor The RHA has sent an extended note to the Treasury ahead of the “50-day” budget on June 22. We welcomed the tone and objectives from the government so far; we highlighted the outstanding progress made by the industry in terms of safety and environmental impact; and we offered our support.
