Driver shortages, IR35, and the RHA’s campaigning

The RHA is calling for urgent Government action to ease a growing crisis in driver shortages ~ made worse by the introduction of IR35 tax changes. Pallet firms in particular are having to extend-next day deliveries by up to five days.

Van regulation is changing: Take five minutes to help get prepared

We're urging any and all van operators, regardless of whether they currently move goods internationally, to complete our short Van Operator Survey.

From 21 May 2022, in accordance with the Trade & Cooperation Agreement between the UK and the EU, any van (or other goods vehicle) above 2.5t, up to and including 3.5t Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight, that carries goods for “hire or reward” internationally will have to be operated with an international operator’s licence.

UK vans will then have to carry a copy of the operators “UK Licence for the Community” when carrying goods internationally.

Latest DVLA update on driver licence renewals 

We have received an update from DVLA on the issue of driver licensing renewals, which is affecting members attempting to renew their vocational driver licence.

The Department explained that, while vocational licence renewal transactions are given the highest priority at DVLA, there have been some delays because of the impact of the pandemic and the recent industrial action.

DVLA’s processing teams are currently processing vocational licence renewal transactions within 2/3 weeks of their receipt, and they have apologised that some applications were taking longer than this to process.

IR35 Tax Changes: Engaging workers via intermediaries

The Government’s clampdown on self-employed staff “off the books” came into effect earlier this month.

We’ve have worked with our lawyer’s and employment tax adviser to put together a contract which can be sent to the Agencies you engage with for the provision of drivers in order to attempt to mitigate those risks. View our Agency Letter here.

Stress Awareness Month: Insights from D4Drivers

April is Stress Awareness Month, and Dr Joe Pearson of D4Drivers has written some guidance for the latest edition of Roadway Magazine.

Dr Pearson wrote that a study by the mental health charity MIND noted that 30% of illnesses in the transport and logistics industry are mental health related.

Drivers are often isolated, having to concentrate for prolonged periods in tricky traffic conditions and are under pressure to meet delivery targets and deadlines.

Classroom training is back! Mark Taylor talks about our Covid-secure courses

We’re delighted to announce that classroom-based training sessions are back at the RHA, with courses such as our popular Transport Manager CPC taking place at eight approved training centres over the coming months.

Classroom-based training courses allow candidates to share knowledge and network with fellow logistics professionals, providing them with the knowledge base required to run successful, compliant and efficient operations.
