Closer EU ties can unlock investment in UK logistics

I was discussing why the current EU reengagement process is relevant to our sector. Greater engagement with the European Union offers clear strategic, operational, and commercial advantages for the sectors represented by the Road Haulage Association. It potentially gives confidence to business in UK PLC and supports export and overall growth along with tourism.

At a fundamental level, the EU remains the UK’s largest trading partner. For haulage / road freight, coach, and van operators, this means that alignment, access, and influence in EU-related frameworks directly impact day-to-day operations—from border processes and customs arrangements to driver mobility and regulatory compliance. Increased engagement enables the industry to help shape, rather than simply respond to, evolving rules that affect cross-border movement.

From an operational perspective, closer dialogue can help reduce friction at borders. Issues such as cabotage rights, the 90/180-day rule, Entry/Exit systems, and documentation requirements all influence efficiency, costs, and driver utilisation. Proactive engagement supports clearer guidance, better implementation timelines, and the potential for pragmatic solutions—such as exemptions or easements—that reflect the realities of logistics operations.

Economically, stronger EU engagement supports the competitiveness of UK operators. Reduced administrative burdens and improved market access help protect margins in a sector already operating on tight returns. It also ensures UK hauliers remain viable partners in European supply chains, safeguarding volumes of work and supporting wider UK trade.

There is also a strategic opportunity around decarbonisation and future fuels. The EU is moving at pace on alternative fuel infrastructure, vehicle standards, and sustainability frameworks. Engagement allows the RHA to both inform and learn from these developments—ensuring UK operators are not disadvantaged and can access emerging technologies, funding mechanisms, and best practice.

Finally, engagement strengthens the industry’s voice whilst working with bodies like the IRU. By maintaining strong relationships with EU institutions and stakeholders, the RHA can advocate for practical, industry-led solutions that recognise the essential role of road transport in keeping goods, people, and economies moving.

Remembering that a minimum of 80% of supply chains moves on road, a key economic enabler . One thing is clear we need a plan ti give some clarity , certainty and drive investment of time and money back into the economy.
