GB-NI: Businesses need more clarity on what's required of them

The findings of a new FSB "Windsor Framework realities" report are in-line with what RHA members have long been saying.

Commenting, RHA Policy Director (for Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland) Martin Reid said:

As GB-NI trade disruptions continue, there remains a lack of communication from HMRC officials on the ground. Long-held concerns around the Trader Support Service (TSS) remain too.

The points highlighted in the report echo the concerns that we've shared for a long period of time about the lack of clarity available to firms moving goods GB to NI. As the report suggests, confusion continues and many smaller businesses are trying to understand and be compliant with the new arrangements, but are drowning in paperwork, with cost implications spiralling - and often wiping out any profit.

We need clearer communication in plain English on what's required of firms. This means workable processes, real-time - live support and up to date information. The impact on the supply chain and the economic consequences of failing to get this right stretch far beyond our sector.

We've warned about the inevitable reality of not addressing these matters. It's time for ministers and officials to step up and find solutions to these long-standing issues.
