Smart Tachograph 2: Final Reminder for 2.5t Vans

The rollout of Smart Tachograph 2 is now entering its final major phase, with a critical deadline fast approaching for operators of light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

From 1 July 2026, all vans over 2.5 tonnes engaged in international transport must be equipped with a Smart Tachograph 2. This requirement applies to UK operators undertaking journeys into the EU.

This marks a significant extension of the EU’s tachograph regime, bringing LCVs into scope for the first time under the Mobility Package.

What This Means for Operators

Operators running vans internationally should now be taking immediate steps to ensure compliance. This includes:

• Confirming whether vehicles exceed the 2.5 tonne threshold

• Booking installation with approved workshops ahead of expected demand

• Ensuring drivers are trained in the use of Smart Tachograph 2 functionality

• Ensuring drivers have valid tachograph cards

• Reviewing operational processes to align with new recording requirements

Failure to comply from 1 July 2026 could result in enforcement action, including fines, vehicle immobilisation, or restrictions on cross-border operations.
