The twin forces reshaping road transport

The twin challenges of decarbonisation and the widespread adoption of AI will increasingly dominate and change the world of road transport over the next few years.

Much of the UK’s interest and even the Government’s “Artificial Intelligence Action Plan” has centred around general road fleet operational efficiency, safety and reliability such as:
•Route Optimisation, AI systems can analyse real time data to determine the most efficient routes, reducing delays and fuel consumption.
•Predictive maintenance and AI led “smart” vehicles and trailers, improving road safety and operational efficiency.
•Traffic management, AI led predictive analytics to monitor traffic and adjust information signals dynamically, therefore improving journey times and reducing emissions.
•Safety management, AI systems monitoring motorways in real time plus predictive analytics, sending alerts to driver and control centres.
•Autonomous vehicles are heavily dependent on AI to operate safely and navigate complex environments, using machine learning and computer vision.

All contribute to a more sustainable and efficient transport network. But the real gamechangers will be when AI solutions are embedded within legacy systems.

Logistics is moving to a future of AI agents that will autonomously negotiate rates and verify documents, but this will be reliant on a completely secure and verified digital environment. Digitisation of transport onto online freight platforms has heightened the risk of identity theft but also provides powerful tools that go beyond current human registration checks, providing multi layered authorisation and continuous autonomous monitoring of every single transaction.

The rapid implementation of AI quoting agents by the larger freight forwarders is a clear direction of travel for the industry. Global freight giant C H Robinson was an early adopter of AI quoting agents, automating the quoting process for all modes of freight shipments, including full and part truck loads, plus express type shipments. Previously, employees manually processed over 10,000 daily email requests for price quotes, which involved reading emails, interpreting customer needs, consulting the Dynamic Pricing Engine, and sending responses.

The AI quoting agent now completes this process in approximately 30–32 seconds, operating 24/7 and handling all incoming requests. The AI agents are trained to replicate human decision-making, incorporating the company’s extensive market knowledge and customer-specific variables. This allows the system to generate personalised, high-quality quotes whilst maintaining a conversational tone. The immediate tangible business benefits were delivered in 100% quote response compared to 65% response by human agents; quotes are replied to in seconds instead of hours or days, resulting in corresponding business growth. The AI quote system is now additionally handling capacity acquisition from carriers and even scheduling pickup.
