When does cheaper actually become more expensive?

When does cheaper actually become more expensive?

I've recently talked about the importance of skills and collaboration in our industry. This time, I want to focus on something that brings both together: training, and more specifically, the balance between price, value and quality.

Let's face it, we're all feeling the financial pressures. Whether you're running a haulage operation, managing a training business or balancing budgets elsewhere, every pound matters. And when margins are tight, it's only natural to look for savings.

But there's a question worth asking. When does cheaper actually become more expensive?

The training market is incredibly competitive, not unlike the haulage industry itself. There's always someone willing to offer a lower price. But just as operators know that delivering a quality transport service involves far more than offering the cheapest rate, the same principle applies to training.

Good training isn't simply about ticking a compliance box or getting someone through an exam. It's about giving people the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to do their jobs better and, importantly, more safely.

Our latest RHA training feedback reinforces this. From 1,558 course evaluations collected during 2026, an impressive 99.9% of learners said their course objectives were met. Our courses achieved an average score of 4.87 out of 5 for presentation, while 98.4% rated their relevance as good or excellent.

I'm particularly pleased that the feedback consistently highlights our trainers' knowledge, professionalism and practical experience. These are the things that make a genuine difference. Are we perfect? Absolutely not. Feedback has also highlighted opportunities to improve course materials, joining instructions and the pacing of certain programmes. And that's precisely why we ask for it.

As a trade association, we have a responsibility to offer our members great value, particularly in the current economic climate. But value should never come at the expense of quality. We must remain competitive, embrace new ways of delivering training and continually challenge ourselves to improve. However, joining a race to the bottom on price is a dangerous game when the real investment is in our industry's people.

Because ultimately, the cheapest training isn't necessarily the best value. The training that makes a difference is.
