Why logistics operators need more than just rail commitment

Yesterdays welcome news on rail investment and improvements. Our railways need sustained funding and it’s good to see Government commitment to infrastructure. But we cannot overlook the importance of investment in our road network. Roads are the workplace for road freight, coach and van operators, and they’re fundamental to the wider UK economy.
81% of all freight moves by road. Businesses across the supply chain depend on fit for purpose roads every single day. Without them, goods don’t reach shops, materials don’t reach building sites, and people can’t get to work.
Modern and fit for purpose roads cut congestion, connect communities and keep the supply-chain and the wider economy moving. The road network is also essential to delivering other Government priorities like housebuilding targets. You cannot build homes, schools and hospitals without roads to supply them.
This rail announcement is positive, but we need the same level of commitment to roads. Spades in the ground soon on local and nationally significant road projects must be a priority too.
Road investment is the foundation upon which the economy depends. Policymakers have an opportunity to build a more efficient road network, capable of supporting a growing economy.
