Why the next Prime Minister must prioritise logistics

As the new Prime Minister sets out a vision for economic growth, there is one sector that must not be overlooked: road transport and logistics.

The industry the RHA represents is far more than a collection of haulage, coach and van operators. It is a critical economic enabler that underpins almost every aspect of daily life and every sector of the economy. Around 85% of all goods move by road at some stage of their journey, connecting manufacturers to markets, ports to distribution centres, retailers to consumers, and communities to the services they rely on.

When logistics works well, it is often invisible. But that invisibility should never be mistaken for a lack of importance.

Every government priority—whether it’s economic growth, housing, manufacturing, healthcare, defence, international trade or the transition to net zero—depends on an efficient, resilient and productive logistics sector. Without it, ambitions become far harder to deliver.

That is why logistics must be recognised as a strategic national asset, not simply another industry. Investment in infrastructure, skills, driver welfare, innovation, decarbonisation and proportionate regulation is not just investment in our sector—it is investment in the UK’s future prosperity.

The road transport and logistics industry doesn’t simply support the economy; it enables it. If the Government wants to unlock growth, improve productivity and strengthen national resilience, logistics must be at the heart of its economic strategy.

The RHA will continue to work constructively with government, industry and stakeholders to ensure our sector receives the recognition and support it deserves—not for its own benefit, but because the success of every other sector depends upon it.
