Policy Lead for Infrastructure James Barwise told LBC News
that road investment has been positive but can go a lot further.
James told Faye Barker “We've seen positive signs [government
road investment] already. For example, the government had its Network North
package last year, which had about £36 billion, as well as its plan for
drivers.
“But we feel the government can go a lot further. The M25 is a
classic example of a scheme that when it was built it was already
oversubscribed. So, this is just making sure that the government needs to
continue investing in our road network. At the end of the day, our roads and
our motorways are the lifeblood of our economy.”
The RHA is campaigning for the UK and devolved governments and
local authorities to maintain and extend commitments to long-term investment in
the road system – on the strategic road network, the major road network, and
other major local roads.
Significant investment in the Strategic Road Network would
alleviate congestion, which is estimated to have costed the UK economy £9.5bn
in 2022. Eliminating congestion where possible will ensure that commercial
vehicles can undertake their journeys reliably.
