Use Dash Cam Footage responsibly

Proposals that police forces in Wales will use dashboard camera footage from the public as evidence in an effort to crack down on ‘lunatic’ drivers need to respect driver privacy. Any evidence used in this way should not published in ‘naming and shaming' attempts, says the Road Haulage Association.

RHA comments are available here.

Driver CPC Cards

Existing drivers need to note that the Driver Qualification Card is no longer issued on completion of the 35 hours periodic Driver CPC training (unless you are a newly qualified driver); the new one  is now issued 6 months before the expiry of the old Driver Qualification Card.

Colin Snape, RHA Deputy Policy Director, commenting on new Driver Qualification Card statistics said “It is also encouraging to see a two fold increase in new entrant HGV licence holders.” New HGV licence holders amounted to 38,320 in 2016/17 up from 14.0003 in 2011/12.

The importance of road freight

Over the coming months the RHA will be publishing a series of simple fact sheets showing the contribution road haulage makes to competitiveness and economic wellbeing of the UK.

The importance of road freight is shown by statistics from DfT for Great Britain, these show that:

  • 89% of the land transportation of goods is by road freight.
  • 98% of food and agricultural product transportation is by road.
  • Road also transports 98% of consumer products and machinery moved.

Tolls charges for non UK operators need to be enforced

With nearly 20% of trips by non-UK vehicles over the Dartford crossing not being paid for the RHA has called for better enforcement in an interview with the BBC. More information.

Official statistics are available here.
