Stephen Hards: "Standing still Is not a strategy"

Trade associations have changed considerably. We are no longer simply organisations people contact when they need advice, a document or help interpreting new regulation, important though all those things remain.
Our role must evolve at the same pace as the industries we represent. In road transport, that pace can sometimes feel less like steady progress and more like trying to change a tyre while the vehicle is still moving.
Technology, workforce expectations and the way people learn are all changing. The RHA must therefore continue to listen, adapt and build services that solve real operational problems.
That does not mean trying to become experts in absolutely everything. It means recognising where strong partnerships can combine the RHA’s industry knowledge and trusted relationships with specialist expertise, technology and innovation.
The right partnerships should make life easier for operators. They should help businesses reduce risk, improve efficiency, develop their people and prepare for what comes next. They must also provide genuine value rather than simply adding another product, platform or password to remember.
Learning is a good example. Classroom training will always have an important place, but operators increasingly need flexible options that fit around busy working environments.
E-learning allows people to develop skills when and where it suits them, reduces operational disruption and makes development more accessible across different roles and locations. It gives businesses greater flexibility while supporting colleagues who may prefer to learn at their own pace.
Our intergenerational workforce white paper also highlighted why a single approach will not work for everyone. Different generations bring different experiences, expectations and preferences around technology, progression and learning.
The opportunity is not to decide which generation has got it right. It is to bring their strengths together.
That same principle applies inside the RHA. As we evolve, our colleagues need the same clarity and certainty that we aim to give the industry.
People need to understand why change is happening, what it means for them and how they can contribute. Change without context quickly becomes noise. Change with a clear purpose can create energy, confidence and opportunity.
We will not predict every turn in the road ahead. Our responsibility is to ensure our members, partners and colleagues are as prepared as possible to navigate it together.
Strong partnerships, flexible learning and clear communication will all be essential as we continue to evolve.
Standing still is not a strategy, but moving forward together is.
