The RHA has joined the IRU’s calls for a pragmatic
approach to industry decarbonisation.
Speaking at the 2024 International Transport Forum Summit
of Transport Ministers in Leipzig, IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto
stressed the importance of a pragmatic approach to decarbonising commercial
road transport based on proven, available efficiency measures.
“Greening the world road transport industry is our
mission, and we can’t let crises, however grave, disrupt progress to carbon
neutrality. But this will only happen if we decarbonise pragmatically.
“Governments need to support proven efficiency measures,
at the same time as alternative fuels investment, to decarbonise effectively,”
said Umberto de Pretto.
RHA Policy Lead Chris Ashley said “We fully support Net
Zero targets, but there needs to be proper planning and a clear roadmap to Net
Zero so that industry has the certainty and clarity it needs to prepare.
“We echo the IRU’s call that governments must offer
clarity on targets, proper investment, collaboration with stakeholders, and
certainty on deadlines. A pragmatic and considered approach benefits all.”
Last year the RHA launched the Net Zero Forum aimed at
supporting our industry to a net zero future. It consists of a
cross-representative group of members with the aim of producing an industry
roadmap that can guide action on the road to Net Zero and decarbonising fleets.
Targeted at the many stakeholders who are critical to
making Net Zero a success including government, manufacturers, the public,
private investment funders, facilities, and fuel providers, it will be used to
guide our approach to make decarbonisation a reality.
