The Road Haulage Association has once again warned against locally created safety standards regulating haulage.

The warning comes as Transport for London launches its next phase of consultation on its controversial Direct Vision Standard (DVS) which categorises HGVs by a driver’s vision from the cab.

The RHA is concerned about a growing trend of local authorities imposing their own regulations on the sector putting many businesses at risk.

RHA chief executive, Richard Burnett said that lorries operate nationally and internationally so should be regulated on those bases.

“We fully support the drive to improve safety, but we need the right measures delivered in the right way. DVS and other locally devised policies such as clean air zone charging are a huge concern for an industry which needs and deserves cohesive regulation.”

The RHA will be responding to the consultation before its 23 May deadline.
