Big news for zero-emission van operators

The rules for heavier electric vans (3.5t–4.25t) are being updated to make life easier and cut red tape.
What’s changing?
Roadworthiness testing: 3.5t–4.25t zero-emission vans will move from the HGV test regime into the standard Class 7 MOT, with the first test at 3 years and then annually, which should reduce downtime, costs and admin.
Drivers’ hours and tachographs: the government plans to take these vans out of the EU drivers’ hours rules and bring them fully under GB domestic rules, which should simplify compliance for operators running mainly in Great Britain.
Speed limiters: the requirement for speed limiters stays as it is for now, with the Department for Transport wanting more evidence before making any changes.
Why it matters?
Lower compliance burden: moving to Class 7 MOTs and GB domestic drivers’ hours rules should cut admin and make it easier to operate heavier electric vans day to day.
Support for zero-emission uptake: by tackling some of the practical barriers around testing and drivers’ hours, the changes are designed to speed up the switch to cleaner vans without compromising safety.
What happens next?
The government will now draft and pass legislation to bring these changes into force, including post-implementation safety reviews so the impact on road safety can be monitored and, if needed, adjusted.
Operators should keep an eye on the final legislative timetable and any detailed guidance so they can plan test bookings, policies and driver training ahead of the switch.
