DVLA updates diabetes monitoring rules for lorry and coach drivers

10 Nov 2025 Posted By Richard Smith

DVLA announces that lorry and coach drivers with diabetes are now able to monitor their glucose (sugar) levels using modern technology, such as Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS), which use sensors to track glucose levels in real time.

Until now, professional drivers with diabetes had to rely on finger-prick tests to monitor their glucose levels before and during driving. But the new rule coming in today (Friday 7 November) means they can now use technology like CGMS, which provides real-time glucose readings.

We take diabetes safety very seriously so we welcome this change which will help professional drivers living with diabetes monitor and manage their condition more easily and confidently.
