Yesterday's Opposition Day debate on fuel duty highlighted just how central our sector is to the UK economy, with the Road Haulage Association referenced several times throughout the debate.
It was particularly encouraging to see MPs from logistics heartlands, including Dr Luke Evans MP, recognising the real world impact rising fuel costs are having on operators, supply chains and ultimately consumers. Importantly, there was clear recognition that this is not just a cost on drivers or businesses, but a cost on everyone through higher inflation as increased transport costs feed into the price of goods.
Opposition Day debates are a key parliamentary mechanism for shaping the policy agenda. Votes are non binding but send a clear political signal. On this occasion, the Conservative motion to maintain the 5p fuel duty cut was voted down.
With fuel prices already rising due to global instability, the issues raised in the debate are not going away. We are grateful to all MPs who spoke up for the sector and will continue to press the case for practical support to protect supply chains, businesses and households.
