The latest UK road freight statistics published by DfT, which we feature this month, show an increase in goods moved in 2024, and an increase in the kilometres travelled. They also highlight the fact that GB-registered HGVs travelled over 5,800 million kilometres empty. That’s 30% of the total, and the same percentage as 2023. Which is bad on as many levels as you care to mention.

Tackling the issue is one of the subjects discussed during in an interview with HaulageHub, the founders and operators of the new RHA Exchange. The solution says the tech company is in AI.

We also feature a road test of MAN’s electric range and news of the OEM’s ideas on depot charging. There are varied opinions on the future of where hydrogen drivelines may go.

Our Association news this month includes an update on the Autumn Traffic Commissioner Seminars, which start their national progress in October, and details of National Lorry Week 2025, which begins on 3 November, and the ways in which members can get involved and show support. This year will feature a specially designed trailer wrap, available to members, and supporting the work of the Benevolent Fund. The Association is also in the midst of a project to update and revise the suite of all four Conditions of Carriage. We have news of its progress.
