We are now at the point of full implementation of Smart Tachograph 2 across heavy-duty vehicles engaged in international operations. As of 19 August 2025, all such vehicles registered in the EU and operating outside their country of registration must be equipped with Smart Tacho 2 devices. This includes UK vehicles operating in the EU.
This second-generation device builds on its predecessor with significant technological upgrades, including:
- Automatic recording of border crossings
- Logging of loading/unloading operations
- Remote data transmission for roadside enforcement
- Improved software update capabilities
- Enhanced anti-tampering features
Implementation Timeline Recap
The rollout of Smart Tachograph 2 followed a phased approach:
- 21 August 2023: All newly registered heavy-duty vehicles.
- 31 December 2024: Vehicles with analogue or digital non-smart tachographs had to retrofit.
- 18 August 2025: Deadline for replacing first-generation smart tachographs (installed from mid-2019)
This two-year window aligned with standard tachograph inspection cycles, allowing operators to plan upgrades without disrupting operations.
These measures underscore the EU’s commitment to harmonising transport standards and ensuring robust enforcement.
Next Steps: Light Commercial Vehicles
Looking ahead, the next major deadline is 1 July 2026, when light commercial vehicles (LCVs) over 2.5 tonnes engaged in international transport must also be fitted with Samrt Tachograph 2 devices.
Conclusion
The successful transition to Smart Tachograph Gen 2 marks a significant step toward a more digital, transparent, and enforceable road transport ecosystem in the EU. While challenges such as device availability and workshop capacity caused initial delays, the sector has largely adapted, thanks to coordinated efforts between operators, Member States, and EU institutions.
As we move toward the 2026 LCV deadline continued collaboration and technological innovation will be key.
