Windsor Framework friction and ICS2 readiness

We held a productive roundtable on GB-NI trade at Westminster last week, bringing together MPs, Peers and Government officials alongside a number of our members who operate in Northern Ireland.
Our members deal with evolving trade complexities daily. They understand the friction points, inefficiencies and potential solutions to ongoing barriers to trade firsthand. Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum heard directly from industry about the issues and extra costs facing hauliers every day.
This follows a recent evidence session at Stormont, where my colleagues Alastair Gunn and Martin Reid outlined GB-NI trade realities to the NI Economy Committee. Parliamentarians in Westminster and Stormont MLAs both appreciated hearing facts from those on the ground, with some shocked by the challenges faced by businesses regularly. These events provide a good opportunity for engagement, building workable relationships between parliamentarians and industry, creating dialogue where we can collectively develop solutions that function in reality, not just theory.
Lord Murphy's Windsor Framework review acknowledged the hurdles and obstacles facing businesses operating in Northern Ireland, and the report backed our calls for a Trusted Haulier Scheme. With ICS2 transitioning on 1 January, there are very real concerns about conditions worsening - rather than improving. With EU reset negotiations again on the horizon, we're clear, our key sector must help shape solutions to these longstanding issues. We'll continue to engage with officials in the weeks and months ahead to find a way forward.

Meanwhile, we were delighted to recently announce Brian Beattie as our new Manager of Northern Ireland Affairs, starting in March. Brian brings invaluable sector experience and will enhance support for our NI members whilst leading engagement in the region with decision makers and industry partners.
