Alan Buchanan, Operations Manager at GCN Scotland

My name is Alan Buchanan, and my current role is the Transport Operations Manager at GCN Scotland Limited.

I’ve been working in the transport industry for nearly 30 years, starting my career as a driver. I’ve progressed my career by completing various courses that were relevant to my job role and always looking forward to the next step.

The apprentice scheme is an excellent system that offers anyone who has the drive to establish themselves in an industry that never fails to be challenging, interesting and fully rewarding.

Become an apprentice

Anyone can become an apprentice in this industry. I’ve just completed my ADR course through the scheme which allows me to move dangerous goods. An apprenticeship gives you transferable skills which can support and enhance a variety of different roles: from drivers, or warehousing logistics, to senior management.

The variety of apprenticeship courses include: upstaging your driving licences, health and safety, office-based qualifications, and many more. All of these are industry-recognised qualifications that can help you progress your career.

My role here at GCN is to identify and encourage people who would benefit from an apprentice course.

Investing in people

I believe that investing your time and effort in your colleagues is invaluable to a business and gives people a sense of belonging and inclusion in what you’re trying to achieve.

All of our staff have enjoyed, had the sense of achievement, and enhanced their skills when they’ve completed their apprentice course.

I encourage anyone to get involved with the apprenticeship scheme as it’s open to everyone. There there are no negatives – the only thing that would hinder your progress is you.

If you have the right attitude and drive to succeed in an industry that offers you so many opportunities enquire about this scheme – get your employer involved or contact the RHA.
