Careers Week: Jordan Shelvey, Executive Management

For National Careers Week, we speak to Jordan Shelvey, Executive Management at Romford-based family firm, Shelvey Haulage Ltd.

Could you tell us a bit about your job and the company you work for?

I’ve worked for Shelvey Haulage Ltd, our family run business, for nine years. Mum and Dad were determined from the outset that I was to be involved in every aspect of the business, this started with early starts going out on the road assisting with deliveries, right through to my current role which is more managerial.

My Mum and Dad started the company 31 years ago, originally working out of their loft, when my mum became pregnant (with me) 25 years ago and could no longer fit through the loft hatch, my Dad’s solution to this was to make the loft hatch larger (true story) and we have all adopted and continued this mindset on finding solutions for our customers.

As you can imagine we have acquired a wealth of experience over the last three decades in all aspects of the haulage industry. The company is proud to be a holder of the prestigious FORS GOLD status, emphasising our commitment to delivering the highest standard of service for our customers.

How did you get into the industry?

It’s simple… I was born into it!

What does your average working day consist of?

No two days are ever the same. I can be working on health and safety, finances, scheduling maintenance, monitoring drivers’ tacho compliance, maintaining our FORS GOLD, visiting customers to name just a few things…

What skills do you need for your role?

It is imperative to absorb important information and to be organised. Communication is key, you also need to be good at problem solving and have confidence to carry out all these tasks.

What makes your role important?

It’s really important that I keep up to date with current regulations to keep our business compliant.

What kinds of tools do you use?

The tools I use regularly are the RHA’s portal for Tachograph analysis, accountancy software and a lot of excel spreadsheets. I use lots of other tools too and I’m very fortunate to have my Mum and Dad on hand with their wealth of experience whenever I need them.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love how rewarding it is. Every day in this sector gives you a sense of accomplishment and sometimes you must think quick on your feet as time can be of the essence.

Another great aspect about my job is that I get to work with my family.

What advice do you have for people looking to start a career in logistics?

Firstly, I would thoroughly recommend a career in the transport sector. I feel there are so many opportunities in this industry that could compliment people’s different skill’s set.
