Drugged Drivers Can Cause Serious Problems For Firms

The past ten years have seen an alarming increase in drunk and drug driving, both across broader society and, more significantly, within the workplace.
This is highlighted by the fact that National Police Chiefs Council reported that the December 2022 festive season saw an increase in drug driving that, for the first time, surpassed drink driving in terms of its frequency across the UK. This represents a critical turning point, emphasising the seriousness of the situation.
We at the RHA consider ourselves to be duty bound to alert our members to the severity of the issue. We have therefore formed a collaboration with D.tec International Ltd – providers of specialised advice on drug and alcohol testing policies in the workplace. For over 20 years they have been advising and working with blue chip companies and public sector organisations to provide drug and alcohol testing services and equipment for safety critical employees, as well as all 43 police forces in England, Wales, and Scotland.
The outcome of impaired driving, whether attributed to drugs or alcohol, carry profound implications, particularly within the workplace. As we approach the forthcoming festive season, preparations for the holiday period are already well underway for many transport operators. It is widely acknowledged that the logistics sector in the UK faces additional challenges during this time, including a shortage of available drivers and limited warehousing capacity, amid heightened demand and increased shipping volumes.
But of course, the misuse of drugs and alcohol is not just a seasonal thing - it happens all year round. This is why we strongly advise taking proactive measures to safeguard your workforce.
Pre-employment Screening
It is essential to exercise due diligence when hiring staff, even when engaging in seasonal recruitment. The associated costs resulting from ill-advised hiring decisions include wasted resources on training, diminished employee productivity, and increased staff turnover.
Pre-employment screening confirms the eligibility of prospective employees by identifying and excluding individuals with active substance dependencies before they assume their roles within the organisation. It is essential to recognise that hiring individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol can pose severe risks to the business, jeopardising your brand reputation, your own safety, the safety of your fellow employees, customers, and the public. Additionally, pre-employment screening offers an opportunity to highlight the company’s culture to new and prospective employees.
Given that seasonal employees may have a relatively brief time with your organisation, it is imperative that they contribute positively to the company’s objectives rather than making any existing challenges worse.
Mitigating Christmas Party Mayhem
The festive season, often marked by office parties and gatherings, provides an opportunity to let employees unwind and, simultaneously, acknowledge and reward their dedication and hard work over the previous 12 months. These social events offer numerous benefits, including team bonding, enhanced professional relationships, and a boost in employee morale. However, it is vital for employees to be mindful of their behaviour and for employers to set clear expectations without appearing overly stringent. A gentle reminder that any inappropriate misconduct may result in disciplinary measures, including potential dismissal, can help to focus employee’s minds.
It is also crucial to communicate the company’s position on employees who have consumed alcohol and their prohibition from driving home.
As an employer, it is advisable to consider alternative arrangements for alternative transport options to ensure the safety of all employees. It is fundamental that employees understand that what they consume the night before will have an affect on their work performance the following day, impacting concentration levels, driving skills and reaction times.
Prioritising Employee Mental Health
Ensuring drivers receive the necessary mental health support from their employers is of vital importance. The absence of such support can lead individuals to seek alternative coping mechanisms to alleviate the stress they may be experiencing. It is a well-documented fact that drugs and alcohol are frequently resorted to as coping mechanisms, as they can induce feelings of relaxation, reduce inhibitions, impair judgment, and affect memory for many individuals.
However, the consumption of drugs or alcohol within the workplace, or even the night before, can render individuals unfit to perform their duties effectively. This impairment can compromise their ability to make critical decisions accurately and promptly, with potentially hazardous consequences.
