Malcolm Group CEO Andrew Malcolm MBE has called for a skills levy to help support the haulage industry.
The long-standing RHA member appeared on BBC’s Newsnight on the Road yesterday (Monday 11 March) as part of a panel of representatives of several business sectors posing questions to local politicians.
During a discussion on education, Andrew said: “Our biggest issue is that if you take out 2,000 of our employees, over 700 of them are drivers. Normally they’re mature individuals, not youngsters.
“Trying to access the [apprenticeship levy] when we've got an aging population plus a shortage of skilled drivers is difficult. A skills levy would service the wider population.”
We are calling for the Apprenticeship Levy to be reformed to a Skills Levy so it can provide businesses with funded access to the training that best fits their requirements.
Businesses need a levy that is flexible for the learner and employer alike, that can react to and prevent future skills shortages.
