New rules for drivers of Electric Vans up to 4.25t

The rules are changing concerning drivers of ‘alternatively fuelled’ vans with a maximum gross weight between 3.5t and 4.25t.

In future, a driver with a category B licence who has completed a minimum of 5 hours additional relevant training will be allowed to drive a vehicle powered by electricity, natural gas, biogas, hydrogen or combined hydrogen and electricity.

The new law comes as part of the government’s commitment to encouraging the transition to ultra-low emission vehicles. Further details on the changes can be found online.

Brexit – seeking settled status for employees

Brexit has not gone away.

Many staff working for operators will need to seek “settled status” at some point in the future.

Those applying that do not have the right sort of Android phone that allows documents to be scanned will need to use a scanner provided by the Government.

The locations where these scanners are available, and what is required to apply, is on the Government website.

RHA – HGV pollution assessment published

The RHA has publisheda revised assessment of NOx emissions from lorries.

Based on vehicle data published by the Department for Transport, the 2019 assessment shows that by the end of 2018 NOx emissions from lorries had fallen by 50% since 2013 in Great Britain. By 2025 NOx will have fallen over 80% without the need for Clean Air Zones.

The assessment seeks to inform policy makers on how the industry has improved emissions dramatically since 2013. It highlights how this improvement will continue into future.

The full 2019 report is available online.

Diesel Emissions – German report challenges assumptions

A recent report from DW (a German News TV channel) challenges many of the assumptions underpinning current clean air policies being applied in Europe.

It challenges the claimed health impacts from NO2 emission as well as raising concerns about how and where roadside emissions are measured.

You can view the report online, which is about 25 minutes long in English.
