Concerns over potential EES delay

There are reports that a new system to help manage border checks from next month could be delayed again.
The Entry/Exit System (EES) will require travellers to submit facial biometrics and fingerprints when they first travel to or from the Schengen Area after EES is launched. This includes coach drivers and passengers, and truckers.
It is due to go live on 10 November.
But reports suggest that the European Commission could delay its launch amid concerns that technology and infrastructure isn’t ready in a number of countries.
We have long-held concerns about delays at borders, especially at Channel ports where thousands of vehicles pass through every day – and have urged officials to ensure infrastructure is ready.
There has been no confirmation that the launch will be delayed but we are in dialogue with government departments on EES and will update you when we know more.
We are also concerned about the 90/180 rules where non-EU nationals can’t spend any more than 90 days out of 180 in the Schengen area.
The new EES will ensure stricter enforcement so we urge coach operators and hauliers to manage this carefully. We support the idea of a Professional Drivers’ Exemption from Schengen restrictions for those who are transporting people and goods between the UK and EU and would welcome the chance to develop this policy with the Government.
