Transporting dangerous goods – Tyne Tunnel updates

The Tyne Tunnel in Newcastle has upgraded its safety rating from D to C allowing more dangerous goods to be transported by hauliers.
The category C ‘medium risk’ safety rating means that there are restrictions on dangerous goods which may lead to a very large explosion or a large explosion or a large toxic release. The previous ‘high risk’ category D had those restrictions plus cargo that could lead to large fires.
The safety upgrade follows a period of maintenance to modernise the tunnel.
The Department for Transport has released a full list of restrictions on transportable goods through the Tyne tunnel, you can access it HERE.
