The government has its very own enforcement team that has been put in place to ensure that companies and drivers adhere to the law.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has two arms; Vehicle Maintenance and Road Traffic. Vehicle Maintenance Inspectors (VI) carry out inspections at the roadside in order to ensure the vehicle is in a roadworthy and safe condition. All LGVs are required to have a test known as an MOT every year, VI's are responsible for carrying this out. Traffic Inspectors are responsible for the compliance of driver’s hours and tachograph regulations as well as more specialised enforcement such as compliance with dangerous goods requirements.
