Your Stories - Lesley O’Brien, Partner Freightlink Europe, Freight Train, Executive Director Road Haulage Association

"I don't know one of my colleagues who made a career choice to work in transport, and I am no different. My passion was languages. My advice to school children now is to follow their passion and the career will follow. That was the case for me. I studied languages and foreign correspondence, but still did not know what to do. Fortunately I was approached by Thompson Holidays to work in Spain. I returned for the winter and obtained what was intended to be a short term job as PA to the northern general manager at a Gondrand, a French company, based locally. Within a short period of time I was running the French and Swiss department and never looked back."

Your Stories - Caroline Wattley, Project Manager, RHA

"I’m pretty new to the transport sector. I only started working for the RHA as a project manager just under a year ago.
A quick tour of my CV finds me leaving school at 17 halfway through 6th form, I really wasn’t cut out for A levels, but my Dad wouldn’t let me leave school until I had a permanent job. I hadn’t a clue what I wanted to do so I just scatter gunned all the local banks and it wasn’t long before I was offered a job with Lloyds Bank. I worked in a local branch starting as an office junior working in the back office and progressed to a cashier."

Your Stories - Jenny Moss, Operations Manager, XPO

"I started in Transport completely by accident. I had my daughter when I was 18 and wanted to prove to myself I could provide for my family without benefits, so I started work as soon as she was old enough go to a child-minder. This was Morrison Plant Services as an Administrator in the service department. After a couple of years my role was split in two to support the National Transport Manager 2 days a week. His name was Peter Tod (I hope he reads Roadway). He was probably the most influential person I had ever met and he had so much passion for his industry, it was infectious! (Thank you Mr Tod!)"

Your Stories - Linda White, Operations Manager, RHA

Starting off in banking doesn’t seem to be a great road into transport but progressing through mainly customer facing roles, taught me that I could use my analytical, admin, problem solving and customer relationship skills anywhere. At 21 I joined a company demonstrating and training people to use “state of the art” communications equipment. Travelling around the North of England supporting the sales teams and devising bespoke training materials, I realised that a field based role was exactly what I wanted to do.
