An update on green card insurance documents

An update on green card insurance documents

15 Jul 2021 Posted By Josh Reynolds

We have received confirmation from DfT that UK registered vehicles and trailers will no longer be required to carry Green Card insurance documents from Monday 2 August 2021.

This change will mean that you will need to be able to provide proof that the vehicle is insured, and carry a copy of that insurance contract, but you won’t need to carry individual green cards.

DfT have also confirmed that they will be updating their official guidance to reflect this.

The legislation can be viewed here.

This change follows the announcement from the European Commission that they are waiving the obligation to carry insurance green cards, which was brought in at the end of the Brexit transition period.

The move, which includes drivers from Northern Ireland crossing the border to the Republic of Ireland, is warmly welcomed by the RHA Policy Manager for Northern Ireland, John Martin.

He said: “This is a relief for our members who carry goods internationally especially those crossing the Irish border.

“We have long lobbied for this waiver which will reduce some unwanted bureaucracy.”
