RHA highlights need for tougher trailer enforcement

RHA highlights need for tougher trailer enforcement

11 Aug 2022 Posted By James Evison

We are highlighting the need for car, van and agricultural workers and domestic drivers to be aware of the rules regarding towing of trailers.

It follows concerns from members about overweight and inappropriate loads being taken on trailers – and a general lack of understanding by the general public of the rules.

The RHA is working with DVSA on enforcing the issue and is keen to highlight the rules.

Maximum weight

Drivers can tow trailers up to a certain weight with a car driving licence. The weight you’re allowed to tow depends on when you got your licence. You’ll need to know the weight of both the vehicle and trailer – also known as the ‘maximum authorised mass’ (MAM).

The MAM is listed in the owner’s manual – and is normally shown on a plate or sticker fitted to the vehicle or trailer.

More information is available here.

Rules

The rules about what vehicles can tow – and the maximum weights – can be found on Gov.uk here.

There is also confusion around who can use trailers – it will depend on when you passed a driving test with a variety of rules for those passing from before 1997 through to 2021. Details can be found here too.

Additionally, there are tachograph issues which result from commercial vehicle operators operating larger flatbed trucks, for example, and towing heavy loads.

For example, some new pick-ups can tow 3.5 tonnes and will therefore require a tachograph. Details can be found here.

There are different rules if you live or work in Northern Ireland and those can be found here.
