Hauliers call for better facilities "Change is overdue"

Drivers told the RHA of the grim reality of roadside facility standards during a visit to a local truck stop and called for nationwide improvements.

The drivers who spoke to the RHA noted a lack value for the money paid due to limited food options, typically fast-food chains, or sandwiches, leaving drivers with a low sense of morale.

Additionally, cleanliness emerged as a significant concern, particularly regarding shower facilities that often fail to meet basic hygiene standards. Security issues were also brought to the forefront, highlighting the vulnerability of drivers in the face of criminal gangs looking to steal cargo.

One driver lamented “The personal touch has disappeared from the industry. A friendly face after a long day is sorely missed due to increasing reliance on technology.”

Another driver added, “The lack of decent facilities is a widespread issue. Change is overdue.”

RHA area manager for the Northwest Jade Oxlade commented “It’s important that after a hard day’s work drivers can not only feel safe and secure but also feel comfortable. The country relies on their trade, so it’s only right they are given proper facilities to rest after their hard work. The RHA are eager to work with the government and local bodies to improve standards.”

The RHA is campaigning for improved driver facilities across the UK. The current provision of safe and secure parking and welfare facilities available to drivers is inadequate. Many drivers are forced to take their rest periods in their vehicles at the side of the road with no access to hygiene facilities. Nationally there is an estimated 11,000 shortage of lorry parking spaces. The lack of available facilities on our road network makes recruitment and retention of drivers much more difficult.
