RHA collaborating with government to improve LST guidance

We convened a roundtable session with Department for Transport (DfT) officials and a number of operators to find ways to reduce the bureaucracy on using longer semi-trailers.

This was an opportunity to discuss the difficulties hauliers face and the impracticalities of individually risk assessing every route.

Drivers are also expected to hold copies of risk assessments and route plans.

The measures are due to come in from 30 November despite not being required during the 12-year LST trial.

Some RHA members are already parking up their LSTs as these processes are creating inefficiencies and driving up costs.

We’re collaborating with DfT to revise the guidance to make it easier for operators to comply.

Safety is our number one priority and trials have proven that LSTs are safe to be on our roads.

Their increased capacities can mean fewer journeys and reduce congestion which is good for the environment.

We’ve collaborated with our members on working through solutions to these issues. We welcome the opportunity to work with DfT on new guidance – we need this to be available to operators as soon as possible so they have the clarity they need.
